Census PageCensus Resources

One very important resource that you can use for your family research are the many census records available on-line. You will need last names before doing this type of research and not all names as they exist today were spelled the same way in the past . This can hinder your investigation somewhat but not stop it. Using the Soundex system to convert your surname to a code will help you tremendously.  Be sure to visit the following:

The Soundex System

  • Many sources include using your surname (last name) for searching records. The Soundex system was used by the National Archives to index the U.S. censuses (beginning in 1880). It codes together surnames that sound similar but have different spellings.
  • Soundex codes begin with the first letter of the surname followed by a three-digit code that represents the (first three) remaining consonants.

To learn more about soundex and how it is used, go to www.ancestry.com.
